Why two versions expire on exactly the same day

Microsoft ships a new major .NET version every November, alternating LTS (even numbers: 6, 8, 10 — three years of support) and STS (odd numbers: 7, 9 — two years of support). Because of how those windows land, .NET 8 (released November 2023, 3-year LTS window) and .NET 9 (released November 2024, 2-year STS window) both reach end of support on the same date: November 10, 2026 — a rare, notable pileup that catches teams running either version off guard if they weren't tracking both.

LTS doesn't mean "safe to ignore"

Even LTS releases only get 3 years total, shorter than many other ecosystems' long-term branches — a .NET LTS version adopted at launch can already be more than halfway through its supported life by the time a typical enterprise migration project even kicks off.
