Standard support vs. ESM

Every Ubuntu LTS release gets 5 years of free standard support from Canonical. After that, Canonical's paid Expanded Security Maintenance (ESM, bundled with an Ubuntu Pro subscription) can extend security patches for several more years — which is why a version can be "end of life" for free updates while still receiving patches for organizations paying for ESM. The dates below are the free standard-support end dates specifically.

Why the version numbers double as release dates

Ubuntu's version numbers are literally a release date in YY.MM format — 24.04 means April 2024 — so an LTS release's number tells you both when it shipped and, combined with the standard 5-year window, roughly when to expect it to reach EOL without needing to look anything up.
