Countdown

Next US Election Countdown

A live countdown to the next US federal general election day — the Tuesday after the first Monday in November, every even-numbered year.

Why it's always that specific Tuesday

Federal law fixes US Election Day as the Tuesday after the first Monday in November — a rule set in 1845, originally timed around harvest schedules and the day it took rural voters to travel to a county seat by horse, avoiding both the Sabbath and market day (traditionally Wednesday). It's calculated the same way the Nth Weekday of the Month Finder works, just with an added one-day offset.

Midterms and presidential years both count

This counts down to the next federal Election Day regardless of whether it's a presidential year or a midterm — both occur on the same fixed schedule, every two years.
