Why "a year" has two different answers

"How many seconds in a year" doesn't have one universal answer, because a year itself isn't a fixed length. A plain 365-day calendar year is exactly 31,536,000 seconds. But the actual average length of a year (accounting for leap years, per the Gregorian calendar's 365.2425-day average) is 31,556,952 seconds — about 10.9 minutes longer. Both are used depending on context; this tool shows both so you can pick the one that matches your situation.

Where "a month" gets fuzzy too

Months range from 28 to 31 days, so any single "seconds in a month" figure is necessarily an average, not exact for any specific calendar month. This tool uses 30.44 days (365.2425 ÷ 12), the standard convention — for an exact count in one specific month, use the Date Difference Calculator instead.
