Next Eclipse Countdown

A live countdown to the next solar or lunar eclipse, whichever comes first — with confirmed dates through 2027.

Where these dates come from

Eclipse timing is fully deterministic — unlike weather, it can be calculated centuries in advance from orbital mechanics — so the dates below are confirmed astronomical events, sourced from published eclipse calendars (consistent with NASA and timeanddate.com), not estimates.

Solar vs. lunar, and why visibility varies so much

A solar eclipse is only visible from a narrow path on Earth's surface, so most people never see a given one without traveling; a lunar eclipse is visible from the entire night side of Earth at once, which is why lunar eclipses feel more commonly "seen" even though both types happen at similar overall frequency. Check a specific eclipse's visibility map before planning around it.
