Roughly opposite the Prime Meridian sits a line where crossing it changes the calendar date by a full day — and unlike the Prime Meridian, it was never actually made official by anyone.
The Prime Meridian (0° longitude, running through Greenwich) was formally agreed upon at an 1884 international conference. Its logical opposite, at roughly 180° longitude, is where the calendar date has to flip — because time zones count forward from Greenwich in one direction and backward in the other, and the two counting directions have to meet somewhere. That meeting point is the International Date Line. Unlike the Prime Meridian, though, it was never adopted by any treaty or formal international agreement — it's simply a convention that mapmakers and countries have followed.
A perfectly straight line at 180° longitude would cut directly through Russia's Chukotka Peninsula, several Pacific island nations, and parts of Antarctica — splitting single countries and island groups across two different calendar days. In practice, the line bends sharply around these areas so that entire countries and island chains stay on one consistent date, prioritizing practical governance over geometric neatness.
The line isn't fixed for all time — Samoa famously jumped from the east side to the west side in 2011, skipping December 30 entirely, specifically to align its business week with Australia and New Zealand rather than the United States. Kiribati made a similar move in 1995, unifying its scattered islands (which had previously straddled the line) onto a single date.
Traveling west across the date line, you skip a calendar day forward; traveling east, you repeat one. This is the flip side of the same effect that makes long westward flights feel like they "lose" a day and long eastward flights feel like they "gain" one back — the date line is just where that adjustment happens all at once instead of gradually across many one-hour zone changes.
