Mondayisation: which holidays actually move

Only six of New Zealand's 11 public holidays are subject to "Mondayisation" under the Holidays Act 2003 (extended to Waitangi Day and Anzac Day by a 2013 amendment): New Year's Day, Day after New Year's Day, Waitangi Day, Anzac Day, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day. If one of these falls on a Saturday or Sunday, employees who wouldn't normally work that weekend day get the following Monday (or Tuesday, if both Christmas and Boxing Day land on a weekend) as the observed holiday instead. The other five — Good Friday, Easter Monday, King's Birthday, Matariki, and Labour Day — are defined to always fall on a weekday already, so Mondayisation never applies to them.

Matariki: a lunar-calculated date, fixed by statute

Matariki, the Māori New Year, became a public holiday in 2022 — the first in New Zealand to recognize Te Ao Māori. Rather than being calculated fresh from astronomical data each year, its date was set once by the Matariki Advisory Committee for the full 30-year span from 2022 to 2052, always landing on a Friday in June or July. This calculator uses that official published schedule directly.
