Why the "same day every month" assumption breaks near month-end

A subscription that starts on January 31st has no true "31st" to renew on in April, June, September, or November — most billing systems fall back to the last day of the shorter month instead (April 30th, for instance), which can make the renewal date appear to shift slightly depending on which months are involved.
